Ulrich Fuchs

Ex-Deputy Director Marseille-Provence 2013 and Linz 2009, France


Ulrich Fuchs was born in Neustadt / Waldnaab (Bavaria) in 1951, and now lives in Marseille. After graduate studies in literature, history, sociology and theatre, he obtained a doctorate from the Free University of Berlin.
He taught at Bremen University between 1984 and 2005, then at Mainz University and from 2001 at Avignon University. From 1984 to 2003, he was artistic consultant to Bremen Municipal Theatre.
From 2000 to 2004, he directed the Music and Arts Management department of Bremen University. Since 1998, Ulrich Fuchs has held different positions in the Bremen Culture Senate. Between 2003 and 2005, he prepared Bremen’s candidacy for European Capital of Culture 2010.
In 2009, he was appointed deputy director and director of the programme for Linz European Capital of Culture 2009. In 2010, he was appointed deputy general director and director of the programme for Marseille-Provence European Capital of Culture 2013.
in 2014, he was appointed as a member of the European panel for selecting, monitoring and evaluating European Capitals of Culture. Ulrich Fuchs currently teaches at several universities in Europe.
