The artist, an element of attractiveness for the local areas

At this special time when Europe looks to its future as an inter-connection between dynamic and “competitive” areas (Lisbon Treaty), the words “attractiveness” and “creativity” are increasingly linked, especially from the standpoint of local authorities. This association of ideas questions artists on their role in their local area, both from their own point of view, but also from that of the local authorities and people.
Today, this concept is still confusing, bringing to the table definitions which are somehow antagonist.
What are we talking about when we speak about “creative industries”, “attractiveness”, “uniqueness” and « competitiveness” in a local dimension? How do we imagine between these places and between all these “creative sources”?

Workshop 1: The artist and technological innovations

Today, it is a cliché to say that technological innovations are a revolution in artists’working processes and their environment. Such an assessment concerns different fields, with their own limits and unknown potential developments. Beyond the protection of artistic work (a key subject), these new tools have an influence on the notion of creation, the relationship between artist and material, the business of artistic work as well as artistic education.

Workshop 2: The artist and fair international exchanges

Today, the international level is not only a market opportunity, and it can no longer be addressed with messages in bottles. Local authorities and people feel concerned by “competitiveness”. For the same reasons, they wish to be part of the global geography. The international level becomes “inter-regional”, and the artist is simultaneously an agent and a symbol of these relationships between areas. Will he/she be an element of balance, of fair exchanges, of common development, or will he simply be a tool within an institutional communication strategy?
